On September 30th, 1974 a group of Christians met for the purpose of constituting a new Independent Baptist Church in Marion, North Carolina.

A church covenant and articles of faith were adopted.
Pastor Jeff Alverson was called at the organizational meeting to become the pastor.
In 1976, Pastor Dean Silver was called to be the new pastor.

He served as pastor for the next 35 years.

Our History

What's in a Name?

Maranatha is a word used in the Bible only once that was transliterated from its original Aramaic into a Greek term.  It is actually two words in one 'Maran Atha.'

  Maran is a title similar to Lord when referring to a teacher with great honor and respect.  Atha is translated as "come."  Some have said that this phrase is translated as "The Lord is coming" or "Come, Lord."  It is most likely a declarative statement meaning, "The Lord has come."  This is an answer to the long awaited arrival of the Messiah who was Jesus Christ.  Indeed, since Jesus is the Messiah and has come, He will likewise come again as He said.

Our Doctrinal Stand

THE SCRIPTURE

We receive the Bible as the all-sufficient basis of faith, practice, and doctrine (John 17:17; Prov. 30:5, 6).  We believe men, who were divinely inspired (God-breathed), wrote down the very Words of God and that the original manuscripts had no errors and were indeed infallible.  We believe in the verbal (every word) and plenary (complete) inspiration of the Old and New Testaments.  We believe the Holy Bible is the center of all true Christianity.  We believe that God has preserved His Word since Its authorship and that He has continued to preserve His Word in English in the King James Version, the best translation for the English language, and is the only version that can be used for preaching and teaching in our Church (2 Timothy 3:16, 17; 2 Timothy 3:15; Ps. 119:60; 2 Peter 1:19-21; Proverbs 30:5, 6).

THE TRUE GOD

We believe there is only one, true and living God (Deut. 6:4; Jer. 10:10).  He is infinite, intelligent, perfect in Spirit, and a personal Being whose name is JEHOVAH.  He is the Creator, Preserver, and Supreme Ruler of the universe

(1 Kings 8:27; Acts 17:24-28; Ps. 139:1-6; John 4:24), inexpressibly glorious in holiness (Ex.15:11; Isa. 6:3), and worthy of all other perfection

(love, power, righteousness, truth, etc.).

In the unity of the Godhead there are three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (Matt. 28:19; 1 Cor. 12:4-6; 1 John 5:7);

equal in every Divine perfection (John 10:30, 14:23, 17:5,10; Acts 5:2-4);

and executing distinct but harmonious offices in the great work of redemption (Eph. 2:18; Rev. 1:4, 5).

THE FATHER

We believe that He is the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ (Eph. 1:3) and the Father of all who come to God through Jesus Christ (John 1:12).

We rejoice that He mercifully concerns Himself in the affairs of men;

that He hears and answers prayer; and that He so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosever believeth in Him should not perish,

but have everlasting life (John 3:16).

 THE SON

  1. His Place in Scripture.  We believe that the whole of Scripture centers upon the Lord Jesus Christ and points to His suffering and the glory that should follow (Luke 24:27, 44).

2. His Incarnation.  We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, became a man without ceasing to be God, was supernaturally conceived of the Holy Spirit, and was born of the Virgin Mary

           (Isa. 7:14; Matt. 1:18-25; Luke 1:35).

         3. His Passion.  We believe that Jesus was without sin in His own life

(1 Peter 2:22), but that He was made to be sin for us upon the Cross of Calvary, where He suffered all the wrath of God against sin as a substitutionary sacrifice (1 Peter 2:24).

His burial declares the complete putting away and removal of our sins

(Rom. 6:6), and His literal bodily resurrection assures our justification and manifests His complete victory over sin, death, and Satan (1 Cor. 15:1-8).

         4. His Ascension. We believe that the risen Lord Jesus ascended into heaven and is now exalted at the right hand of God, where as our great High Priest, we have in Him an advocate with the Father,

Who ever liveth to make intercession for His own (1 John 2:1-3).

 THE HOLY SPIRIT

  1.    His Personality. We believe that the Holy Spirit is a Divine Person, equal with the Father and the Son, and is of the same nature (John 16:7).

 2.     His Work in the World.  We believe that His relationship to the unbelieving world is His restraint of the evil one (2 Thess. 2:7);

His conviction of sin, righteousness, and of judgment; and His bearing witness to the truth of the Gospel as the Word is presented (John 16:8-11).

            3.   His Work in regeneration.  We believe that the Holy Spirit is the Agent in the New Birth, all believers are baptized in the Spirit into the body of Jesus Christ (1 Cor. 12:12-14), and from the moment of conversion,

He indwells the child of God (1 Cor. 3:16).

                4.   His Work in the Christian.  We believe that He is the Divine Teacher, Who guides the believer into all truth (John 16:13).  It is His power in the believer that gives victory over sin and Satan (Eph 1:19-23).

It is the privilege and responsibility of every Christian to be filled with the Holy Spirit and thus be empowered for the work to which he has been called (Eph. 5:17, 18).

THE DEVIL OR SATAN

  1. His Creation.  We believe that Satan is a real personality; that he was created under the heavenly title of “Lucifer, the Son of the Morning,”     and that he was given a place of glory over all created beings                   (Isa. 14:12; Ezek. 28:12-15).  Satan was created perfect but fell because of pride.  He is the author of the Fall and the arch enemy of God and the souls of men  (Job 1:6, 7).

2. His Fall.  We believe in his desire to be “like the Most High.”

He manifested his rebellion toward his Creator and for this was cast out of heaven with others who followed his rebellion (Isa. 14:12-15).

       3. His Purpose.  We believe that in his fall, he became “Satan, the adversary of God,” and the adversary of every child of God.  He is the great deceiver and the accuser of the brethren (Rev. 12:9, 10).

He is the spirit that now works in the children of disobedience, blinding their minds to the truth of the Gospel (2 Cor. 4:3, 4).

4. His Power.  We believe that Satan’s power is limited (his not being omnipotent as is God’s), but that it is increased by the innumerable host of demons, who do his will and serve him.  Though he is not omnipresent or omniscient, yet through those wicked spirits, he is in touch with the whole earth (Dan. 10:13; Zech. 3:1; Eph 2:2; Acts 26:18; Col. 1:13).

        5. His Defeat.  We believe that through the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ, a perfect judgment of Satan and his followers had been secured (John 12:31; 16:11; Col. 2:14, 15); opening the way to victory for the believer and insuring the final judgment of all Satanic hosts in the Lake of Fire (Jude 6).

MAN

  1. His Creation.  We believe that man came into being by the direct creation of God as recorded in Genesis 1 and 2 and not by Evolution.

The fall of our first parents caused the total depravity and lost condition of all men by nature (Romans 3:19, 5:12-19).

2. His Fall.  We believe that man was created in holiness and in the image of God but by voluntary transgression, fell from a sinless and happy state      (Gen. 3).  As a consequence, all of mankind are now sinners, not only by nature, but by choice, and are utterly void of the holiness required by the law of God, are positively inclined to evil (Rom. 5:19a; Rom 3:23), and are therefore under the condemnation to eternal ruin without defense or excuse              (Eph. 2:13; Rom 1:32; 2:1-16; Gal 3:22; Ezek. 18:19; Gal. 3:10).

3. His Regeneration.  We believe the Regeneration or the New Birth is that miracle formed in the soul by the Holy Spirit, in which the Divine Nature is imparted unto man when he repents of his sin and believes in the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  Thus, he is made a new creature in Christ Jesus

(2 Cor. 5:17; John 3:1-14).

4. His Final End.  We believe in the bodily resurrection of the just and the unjust (John 5:28, 29; Rev 20:6; 11:15); that Heaven is the everlasting abode of the saved, a place of everlasting blessing; that Hell is an everlasting abode for the unsaved, a place of everlasting conscious punishment

(John 3:16, 36; Matt. 25:41; Rev. 21:8; 1 Cor. 3:13-15).

SALVATION

1. Election.  We believe that election is the eternal purpose of God, according to which He graciously regenerates, sanctifies, and saves sinners, this being perfectly consistent with the free agency of man

(Acts 13:48, 15:14; 2 Thess. 2:13, 14; John 10:16; Matt. 20:16).

It is a most glorious display of God’s sovereign goodness;

being infinitely free, wise, holy, and unchangeable

(Eph. 1:11; Ex. 33:18, 19; Rom. 9:23; 11:28, 29, 32-36; Jer. 31:3; 2 Tim. 1:9).

It utterly excludes boasting and promotes humility, love, prayer, praise, trust in God, and active imitation of His free mercy

(1 Thess. 2:12, 13; 1 Cor. 1:26-31; 4:7; 15:10; Luke 18:7; Col. 3:12).

Its effects may be ascertained in all who truly believe the Gospel

(1 Thess. 1:4-10).

2. The Atonement.  We believe that the salvation of sinners is wholly of grace through the imputed merits and the mediatorial work of the Son of God, as a vicarious sacrifice on Calvary’s Cross, where He shed His precious blood for our redemption (Isa. 53; 2 Cor. 5:21; 1 Peter 1:18-21).  He was buried, our sins being put away with Him in His burial (Ps. 103:12), and was raised again to assure our justification.  He has ascended to a high priestly ministry on our behalf.  He is in every way qualified to be an all-sufficient Savior, and nothing can be added to His finished work (Heb. 10:11-14; Col. 1:10-22; 2:10).

3. Repentance.  We believe that genuine repentance is a godly sorrow for sin and a turning from sin, which is an essential aspect of the sinner’s salvation (Luke 24:47, Acts 3:19).

4. Faith.  We believe that personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ

(faith in His atoning work for the removal of our sins) is the only condition for our salvation (John 1:12; 5:24; Acts 16:31; Rom. 4:5).

5. Justification.  We believe that the great Gospel blessing, which Christ secures to such as believe in Him, is justification.  This included the removal of all our sin (past, present, and future) and the gift of eternal life.

Justification is not based on any works that we have done (Titus 3:5) but solely through faith in the Redeemer’s blood.  The believer is judicially “declared righteous” in the Lord Jesus Christ

(Gal. 2:16; 5:1; Rom. 3:20-25; 2 Cor. 5:20; 1 Cor. 1:30).

6. Sanctification.  We believe that at the moment of conversion, each believer is sanctified or made holy by his position in the body of Christ (1 Cor. 1:30).

We further believe that a lifelong process of sanctification, involving victory over sin and spiritual growth in grace, is begun at the time of regeneration and is carried on in the hearts of believers by the person of the Holy Spirit, Whose purpose is to reveal Christ in the Christian (Gal. 5:22-25).

THE CHURCH

  1. The Local Church.  We believe that the local New Testament church is to be composed of regenerated, baptized believers, who have voluntarily united together for the purpose of worship, edification, ordinances, fellowships, and service; that the officers of the local church are Pastors and Deacons, whose qualifications and duties are clearly defined in the Scriptures; the mission of the Church is the faithful witness of Christ Jesus to all men as we have opportunity in the local community and to the uttermost part of the earth; that the local Church has the absolute right to self-government, free from the interference of any individuals or organizations, religious or political; that the one and only Superintendent is Christ, through the Holy Spirit; that it is scriptural for true churches to cooperate with each other in contending for the faith and for the furtherance of the Gospel, with each local church as the sole judge of the measure and method of its cooperation; that on all matters of membership, policy of government, discipline, benevolence, etc., the will of the local Church is final.

(Acts 2:41-47; Rom. 1:7; Eph. 1:15-23; Acts 20:28-31; 1 Pet. 5:1-5; Eph. 3:21).

The Church Ordinances.

  1. Baptism.  We believe that Christian baptism is the immersion of a believer in water (in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost) to show forth our faith in a solemn and beautiful way toward the crucified, buried, and risen Saviour.  Our submission to Christian baptism symbolizes our death to sin and our resurrection to a new life (Matt. 28:19, 20; Col. 2:12).

2.  The Lord’s Supper.  We believe that the Lord’s Supper is the commemoration of Christ’s death until He comes and that the elements are symbolic of the broken body and the shed blood of the Lord Jesus.  Only believers should partake of it, and the partaking should always be preceded by a solemn self-examination (1 Cor. 11:23-28).

LAST THINGS

  1. The Blessed Hope.  We believe in the imminent appearing of the Lord Jesus Christ for His Bride, the Church (1 Thess. 4:13-18).

The believer will then appear before the Judgment Seat of Christ to be rewarded according to his works (1 Cor. 3:12-15).

2. The Second Advent.  We believe in the personal, visible, premillennial coming of Christ to restore the throne of David and to reign a thousand years (Rev. 19:11-16).

3. The Doom of Satan.  We believe that the Devil and his followers are to be cast into the Lake of Fire to be tormented day and night forever and ever

(Rev. 20:10).

4. The Great White Throne.  We believe in the final resurrection of the unjust to stand before God at the Great White Throne of Judgment.

Because these unjust are not written in the Book of Life, they will be cast into the Lake of Fire (Rev. 20:11-15).

4. Eternity. We believe in the glorious eternal reign of God (1 Cor. 15:24-28).
